Computer / Hardware Selection
There are several things to consider when investing your capital into the Information Technology side of your business some of which are:
Performance
Consideration has to be given to the roll the individual PC will play in your organization as to the operations that will be performed on it and the future hardware upgrade-ability of the unit. eg: someone that types the odd letter and sends and replies to emails does not need the same hardware specs and expansion capabilities in their computer as a the person that works in CAD work or graphic design.
Expansion
Buy a PC today you can be sure that it will be slow in comparison to the PC’s that will be on market in two years’ time. The expected life span of any workstation is four to five years, and with these two facts in consideration there is a good chance that any workstation invested in today will require at least one minor hardware upgrade in its life. This is where your initial purchase selection will become important. The small amount extra that you may spend now will ensure that you will be able to upgrade cheaper later, and it is up to your I.T. supplier/consultant to make you aware of this upon recommending the solutions he or she is supplying.
Reliability
Computers are no different to any other purchase “You get what you pay for”. There are two types of hardware on the market, Consumer Products, and Business Grade Products. And it is easy to tell them apart, you just have to look at the warranty details and the price tag. Consumer products for the personal home user “non critical consumer use” these products come with a one year warranty and are purchased from retail outlets. Business Grade Products are higher quality and as a rule have a longer or extendable warranty. This product selection will have a direct bearing on the life expectancy and service level supplied by manufactures. LAN Solutions only supplies Business Grade computer hardware as it will be more cost effective in the future, more reliable and will have a higher level of warranty service supplied by the manufacturer.
